An engaging afternoon of speakers and discussion around the topics of drug overdose, gun safety, and youth suicide will be offered through the collaborative efforts of Alliance Behavioral Healthcare, the Poe Center for Health Education, and Youth Thrive’s Emotional Wellbeing Action Team. Presenters will discuss topics exploring a variety of factors that are influencing increased suicide rates among youth; the impact of how access to means is resulting in increased youth death by suicide; and population-specific stressors that place youth at higher risk than the general population for substance use disorders and suicide attempts.

In North Carolina: --Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for citizens aged 15-34. --In youth ages 10-14, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death. --Overdoses from opioids kill more citizens than car accidents and gunshots. --Access to means, use of substances for self-medication, and access to alcohol and legal/illicit drugs are all factors impacting the rise in suicide rates and prescription drug misuse.
