Strategies for Addressing Loneliness in Behavioral Health Settings

Loneliness is a major, yet underappreciated and underrecognized, determinant of health. Conservative estimates show that one in five adults report significant feelings of loneliness (Holt-Lunstad, 2020). Loneliness takes a substantial toll on a person’s physical and emotional well-being. You may be surprised to learn that the detrimental effects of loneliness on a person’s health and longevity are roughly equivalent to the impact of smoking 15 cigarettes a day (Health Resources and Services Administration, 2019). Unfortunately, social distancing, quarantining, and school and workplace closures associated with the coronavirus pandemic have elevated rates of loneliness to epidemic proportions. These recent events have made the ramifications of loneliness an even more apparent and pressing need. The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human services settings with the skills for identifying and intervening to reduce loneliness and its associated negative outcomes.
